When you choose a LED lighting bulb in the supermarket, do you consider the CRI rating before buying it? Maybe some people will ask what’s the CRI?

CRI is the abbreviation of COLOR RENDERING INDEX. According to WIKIPEDIA, CRI is a quantitative measure of a light’s ability to reproduce the colors of objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. In general terms, CRI is a measure of a light source’s ability to show object colors “realistically” or “naturally” compared to a familiar reference source, either incandescent light or sunlight.

Let’s make this explanation clearer and simpler: Could you tell the difference between the black and navy colored T-SHIRTS in your closet? If yes, congratulations, you have chosen a light with good CRI. If no, maybe your current lighting doesn’t have enough CRI rating.

How to calculate the CRI

It’s very complicated to discuss the calculation of CRI for ordinary users. In the lighting industry, CRI is calculated from the differences in the chromaticities of eight CIE standard color samples(CIE1995) when illuminated by a light source and by a reference illuminant of the same correlated color temperature (CCT), indicating the light color produced by a radiating black body at a certain temperature ; the smaller the average difference in chromaticities, the higher the CRI. CRI is measured from 0 to 100. Now more and more Led lighting manufacturers show the CRI rating on the package for reference. People will compare the rating in the market to make a better choice before buying LED lighting. High CRI rating products present a more real, vivid and harmonious color.
